Defending & Strengthening Democracy

Since 2017, the BISC Foundation has monitored increasing attacks on democracy, including direct democracy. In 2020, we launched our Defend Direct Democracy advocacy campaign. Through this effort, we have educated the public and advocates about the fundamentals of a fair and accessible ballot measure process. Additionally, we helped to change and shape the narrative surrounding direct democracy by creating an important narrative framework around “the will of the people”. This advocacy effort is vital to strengthening the ballot measure process, and our democracy as a whole. 

The BISC Foundation has provided important learning spaces to educate and inform social change advocates, stakeholders, and the public about the dangers of attacks on direct democracy by offering media briefings, convening advocates, delivering messaging toolkits, authoring op-eds, and more.
