Our Mission

The Ballot Initiative Strategy Center Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, strengthens democracy by building a national strategy for ballot measures. Recognizing that initiatives and referenda are permanent parts of the democratic process, we are working to help social change advocates build capacity for their civic engagement plans.

We envision a future in which advocates increase civic engagement, and build a stronger movement infrastructure – and in so doing, achieve greater freedom, equality, and opportunity for all people living in the United States.

Recent Accomplishments

Innovative Research

From exploring how the New American Majority engages with issues ranging from LGBT equality to voting rights expansion in 2013, the BISC Foundation’s groundbreaking research has helped partners and funders make better decisions about messaging, tactics, long-term investments, and national strategy.

Training and Technical Assistance

In October 2013, the BISC Foundation partnered with Wellstone Action to create an advanced ballot measure campaign training program — a first-of-its-kind civic engagement training.

We also increase the capacity of social change leaders and organizations through ongoing technical assistance to civic engagement efforts throughout the country.

Facilitating Collaboration

Over the past four years, BISC has helped start new in-state alliances and strengthen existing tables in California, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, and Washington State. In addition, BISC hosts the annual Road Ahead conference, the only convening of its kind focused exclusively on ballot measures. The meeting is attended by a broad cross-section of people working to support social change.
